Valentine's Handkerchief
-
This iconic Portuguese piece, typical of the Minho region, became popular in the 19th century, and represents a “declaration of love.” It was hand-embroidered by rural girls in their adolescence to offer to the boy they loved .
If they wore them in public, it was a sign that their love had been reciprocated, thus beginning the relationship - often in secret. -
These scarves, presented in the shape of a non-perfect square, embroidered with cheerful themes, floral motifs and symbols of love (hearts, flying birds, keys), contain messages written with spelling errors – due to the lack of education of these rural girls, who wrote according to what they heard.
It remains a unique gift today, full of meaning.

Viana Embroidery
Viana Embroidery originated in the ancient costumes of peasant women in the Minho region. They are hand-worked in cotton thread on linen or cotton fabric, and are still used today to enrich traditional costumes, but are also applied to a huge variety of artisanal products, from home textiles to fashion.
